The Garden is one of the most ancient of man's creations. Each garden is unique, reflecting the landscape and climate of its environment, and also the heritage, the history, architectural styles and influences of the people who made it and care for it.

In the British Isles we are fortunate to have some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This website is a celebration of those gardens. The images reveal the spirit of the gardens and their creators. They reflect the beauty of nature and the passage of the seasons, an infinite variety of light and shade, of planting and colour.

Over time, I shall be adding more gardens to this site, and it is my intention to include as many open gardens as possible, to give visitors to this site the opportunity to learn a little about a garden before visiting it, about its history and its design, and to see some photographs. For each garden, there is an article in the Gardens section, and more pictures to view in the Gallery. There are also sections on garden designers and poetry. The section on the gardening year features extracts from Vita Sackville-West's articles of 1950.

The gardens on this site are open to visitors to enjoy. Garden contact details are listed for each garden. For information about the opening days and times for a garden, please contact the garden directly.

This year there is a new section on the site featuring hotels with gardens which are interesting to visit. This will provide suggestions for places to stay both to enjoy the hotel's own gardens and to visit other gardens in the area.

Some of the gardens on this site are well known, others are off the beaten path, waiting to be discovered. The gardens continually change with the passage of time, often rewarding visits at different times of year. I hope you will find the opportunity to visit many, as I have done, and I hope you will enjoy them too.
